For the past few days, facebook is blowing up about the “Duck Dynasty” saga. Is it free speech? Should he lose his job? Etc. etc. Alot of my feed is backing him…well, the straight, white, christian ones anyway. Its a little different when you’re included in the tirade.
What about the whole thing bothers me the most? Well, lets start with what was said: via CNN:
“In an interview in the January issue of GQ, Robertson says homosexuality is a sin and puts it in the same category as bestiality and promiscuity. It seems like, to me, a vagina — as a man — would be more desirable than a man’s anus. That’s just me. I’m just thinking: There’s more there! She’s got more to offer. I mean, come on, dudes! You know what I’m saying? But hey, sin: It’s not logical, my man. It’s just not logical,” he’s quoted as saying. Asked what, in his mind, is sinful, Robertson replied: “Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men.” “Don’t be deceived,” he was quoted in GQ. “Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers — they won’t inherit the kingdom of God. Don’t deceive yourself. It’s not right.”
The man was asked a question and he answered with what he believed in. No harm in that. Stupid, yes. Why? A&E is employing you and you are a face of their brand. They are not going to want to be tagged with being supportive of anti-gay behavior when we’re in the middle of a equality revolution. Was it “unfair” to fire him? That could be argued all day. It happens everywhere. A teacher makes a bad comment about something on facebook, and is fired. A cop says something racist on facebook, is fired. Why did he think he would be any different? Hes a public figure that should have been a little more hesitant in what he replied. A&E had every right to save their ass, and they did. Am I personally angered by him not backing gays? No. He’s entitled to his opinion. The part that is upsetting me is simple:
“Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men.”
This alludes that if you’re gay, you’re going to morph into some kind of bestiality driven monster. That, instead of two people loving each other (of the same sex, and species) to a person who fucks animals. How does one even go from one step to the other. That’s like saying if you use candy cigarettes you’re going to OD on meth. What? Exactly.
And as for “who will inherit the kingdom of God” I wonder who told him specifically who all would be included.
My biggest issue with this in GENERAL, is that people that cherry pick verses from the bible (esp. leviticus and its 76 laws) and try to say one sin is greater than another. Sin is equal. There are many things in that same chapter of the bible that I’m sure he’s commiting himself. Everything from working on Sunday, cutting your hair, wearing blended material, eating fat, touching an unclean animal, letting your hair become unkempt, eating an animal which doesn’t both chew cud and has a divided hoof, touching the carcass of the above, should I go on? But please, lets focus on a vague statement that could be taken into many different contexts, and say how its “more” of a sin than all the above you are commiting?
If you’d like to see how many ways you’re going to hell, check out some of the laws: http://hill-kleerup.org/blog/2012/06/13/76-things-banned-in-leviticus-and-their-penalties.html
Don’t judge a person because they sin different than you.
